Yesterday was the start of the antlerless muzzleloader season.
I went out early in the morning and saw two bucks; a six-point and a four-point. They were in a field only 20 yards away from where I was sitting looking away from me. If only one had been a doe. In the afternoon I went out with my father in the same area and saw another buck, but was not able to count its points. In the evening I went to a nearby farm and sat in a tree stand. Right at quitting time a doe came out with more rustling in the brush. Since it was so near quitting time I decided to take the shot I had of 20 yards away with a few twigs in my way. I fired and my gun went bang (I’m using a flintlock here) and the deer ran. I looked around for blood and went down into the woods a ways, but found nothing. I’m pretty sure I missed the deer because I rushed the shot, but I do think I had a good sight picture. Maybe, I’ll be able to come home from college next weekend to try again.
