I had an interesting day hunting. My Father, three of my brothers, and I went to a state game land to hunt. I was watching for the first drive we put on. As I walked in to a bushy valley area to watch I saw a tail flick on the opposite hillside. I could not quite see the deer well through the tree branches, but I thought I saw antlers. The deer went off in the direction of the drivers. They saw it just as they started the drive. It turned out to be un-shootable since it was a four-point.

Next my brother and I were to put on a drive for the others. While we waited for them to get into position we sat on a power-line. As we were sitting I saw a deer bedded down way out in the woods. I looked at it with the scope and saw it was a doe. So, I shot at it. I looked where it had been and it was still lying in the same position facing me, not looking worried at all. I shot again; this time it jumped up ran a short ways and stopped. I was able to shoot two more times as it ran off.

When we walked down to the where the bed was I realized that the deer was farther than I thought–close to 200 yards away. Just beyond the bed I found a bunch of white hair indicating that I grazed its belly. I found no blood though. I followed the its trail a shot ways and started picking up amount small blood and hair trail. I figured the deer was not hit hard so I decided to give it some time so we went and put on the drive.

When we came back we trailed the deer for about 300 yards with the blood trail becoming less and less. It eventually quit altogether. Then we followed its trail in the leaves the best we could until it went off the state game land.

So close to getting the deer; if I had shot just a little higher. Oh, well there is still flintlock season to look forwards too.
