That’s what I’ve been hearing about the peeking thing. I think I shot under a deer last year for the same reason.

This is very interesting to me. I own a Thompson Center .50 Hawkins, and have never used oil until recently. I’ve always used T/C bore butter as the manufacturer states oil will cause gumming. However as of lately I’ve been shooting it quite often at the range and have noticed my frizzen sticking slightly not allowing the flint to throw good spark. I removed the frizzen, cleaned it well and put a small amount of Tetra gun grease on the moving parts of the lock work. It seems to be working fine with few misfires…. Usually caused by dirt from previous shots. The grease is not likely to run like oil and stays where you put it. I will try usin Teflon as you suggest second season while it’s colder. The Tetra grease may be too thick for clod weather.

Sound like a great day even with the miss. I’ve been hunting the late season for many years with my or flintlock (I use an inline during the early season) but have yet to take a deer with my flintlock. In the beginning I had issues with the gun not going off. After I resolved those, it seemed like I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. I figured I was lifting my head to “peek” just after pulling the trigger, that would cause the barrel to drop and I was consistently shooting low. After a lot of practice on the range my accuracy improved dramatically. Now that I have it all worked out I haven’t had a good shot opportunity for the last several years. Just like past years I’m sure that this will finally be the year I take a deer with my flintlock.
